Get On The Bandwagon by Dave Schwartz firstname.lastname@example.org
Its refreshing to see a band take charge, to step up and affect their future rather than letting their future affect them. Its even more refreshing when many bands take this same step. A few weeks back I was browsing a copy of the Rock City News. To my surprise I found a full-page ad, "Get On The Bandwagon" it read. "Bands supporting other bands" Damn, its about time that someone tries this again I thought. To be certain, this isnt a new idea. But good ideas rarely are new. There is a long history around the southland of bands helping other bands. Orange County bands lending a hand to the Hollywood bands that venture south of the Orange Curtain and of course vise versa. This practice has been successful but only on a limited basis.
Then along came BANDWAGON. A group of local bands that have decided to team together to mutually promote each other and their shows. COMMUNITY! Honest to goodness community. This is one of the main tenants that DaBelly was founded on. How could we not want to be a part of it? I spoke to Frank from the band WOOD. He fleshed out the story for me.
"Bandwagon has been together for about three months now" he started. "We played a gig one night and very few people showed up. If it werent for the other bands on the bill we wouldve been virtually alone."
For those who dont realize, every band has a night like this now and again. With the large numbers of bands playing the southland the occasional slow night is unavoidable. As musicians we plug in and kick ass regardless. After all, we came to play!
"After the show" Frank continued, "we all hung out and talked about what we could do to improve this situation. Thats when Bandwagon was born. We developed the idea of not only promoting our gigs together through advertisment but also showing up to cheer each other on."
Once again, nothing draws a crowd like a crowd. Bandwagon is currently 15 strong and growing. Member bands pay $20 monthly dues that is used to purchase full-page ads in publications such as the Rock City News. Ads like this can be real eye catchers and a great opportunity for bands that could not normally afford the large expense of advertisement.
In the spirit of community, we at DaBelly are supporting this effort. It is Bandwagons goal as well as ours to revitalize live music here in Southern California. In the future you will see more from these bands in the way of interviews and promotion. We are negotiating with the members of Bandwagon to bring their music to DaBelly. We hope to soon be offering their CDs for sale in our DaBelly Store.
