Sabaton – The Great War
by Dave Schwartz

Sabaton - Joakim Brodén (lead vocals, keyboards), Pär Sundström(bass, backing vocals), Chris Rörland (guitars, backing vocals), Tommy Johannson (guitars, backing vocals) and Hannes van Dahl (drums, backing vocals) have released their ninth studio album, “The Great War.”  Normally this would indicate that the band has had a busy year.  But there’s far more going on in the world of Sabaton.

On January 8, 2019, the band announced the creation of a YouTube channel called Sabaton History, a cooperation between Indy Neidell, TimeGhost History and Sabaton. The channel documents the history of the events behind Sabaton songs and the songs themselves.

On April 2, 2019, the band announced a new concept album about World War I entitled “The Great War.” It was released on July 19, 2019.  The album's first single, "Fields of Verdun", was released on May 3, 2019. The album's next single, "The Red Baron" was released on June 13. The title song, "Great War", was released as a single on June 27. And a music video for the track "82nd All the Way" was released on July 20.

On August 3, 2019, Sabaton performed their 20th anniversary show at Wacken Open Air festival.

On August 30, 2019, they were involved in a serious car accident, leaving the band members “broken, badly beaten, bleeding and stitched up.” The band was forced to cancel a show in Poland.

And in October 2019, Sabaton embarked on the North American leg of The Great Tour.  22 shows in 30 days with Hammerfall as support.  I sat down with Pär Sundström and Hannes van Dahl at a stopover in Phoenix, Arizona.  We discussed their busy year, the new record and all things Sabaton.  Check out the video!
